Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them as healthy as possible. This helps avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more costly dental procedures. There are many forms of preventive dentistry, such as diet, daily brushing, flossing and dental cleanings. In order to maintain optimal oral health, the American Dental Association recommends visits to the dentist at regular intervals determined by your dentist. These practices are designed to ensure that teeth are clean, strong, and white. Children should be taught proper oral hygiene at an early age.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Whereas restorative dentistry is primarily concerned with keeping mouths healthy and functioning, cosmetic dentistry is more focused on improving the look of your smile. While dentists always put the health of your mouth first, having cosmetic procedures done may not necessarily improve function as much as appearance. Often, restorative dentistry will fix major issues, such as missing or broken teeth and then cosmetic measures including bonding, contouring or veneers can put the finishing touches on a new smile. Tooth whitening is a process used to lighten teeth and to remove stains and discoloration from the tooth surface. Most dentists perform tooth whitening as it has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures because of how dramatically it can improve one’s smile.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is first and foremost concerned with keeping the mouth functioning as best it can and, in the process of doing so, can improve the overall look of one’s smile. Restorative dentistry refers to the procedures that your dentist performs to keep your mouth healthy and functional. These procedures may include fillings, root canals, crowns, and dentures. This kind of dentistry does not require any specialization; it just refers to the preventative and corrective steps that general practice dentists take to make sure that our mouths stay as healthy as possible.

Emergency Care

Dental emergencies often seem to happen at the most inconvenient times. It is important to know what kinds of injuries require emergency dental care, so you can make sure that your family’s teeth are taken care of, while avoiding unnecessary trips to the dentist’s office. Many emergencies exist that can range from bacterial, fungal or viral infections to a fractured tooth or dental restoration failure, each requiring an individual response and treatment that is unique to the situation. Dental emergencies don’t always involve pain, although this is a common sign that something needs to be looked at. All dental emergencies should be treated under the supervision or guidance of a dental health professional in order to relieve pain and preserve the teeth for as long as possible.
